Preparing for the arrival of a Welsh Corgi Pembroke puppy in its new home

Before bringing a puppy into your new home, it is important to prepare in advance and purchase everything you need.
Having everything ready ahead of time will help you avoid rushing and ensure that your puppy has a safe and comfortable environment from the very first days at home.

For a Welsh Corgi Pembroke puppy, you need to prepare two separate bowls: one for food and one for water.
Water should be freely available at all times.

When feeding, it is important that the bowl does not slide across the floor.
Therefore, it is recommended to choose bowls with a stand or rubber bottom, which provide stability and comfort during meals.
This is especially important for active corgi puppies, who may get distracted and move around while eating.

The material of the bowls should be safe and easy to care for — metal or ceramic bowls are most often chosen because they are easy to wash and keep clean.

2. A place for your puppy to rest

A Welsh Corgi Pembroke puppy must have its own place to rest, where it can sleep peacefully and recharge its batteries.
This can be a soft bed, a baby blanket or a frame bed with a mattress — the main thing is that the surface is comfortable and warm.

When setting up a place for your puppy, it is important to consider its location in the room.
The bed should not be in a draught in summer, near a radiator in winter or under an air conditioner.
It is also worth choosing a place where the puppy will not interfere with people's movements, but at the same time will feel calm and protected.

A properly organised resting place is an important part of preparing your home for the arrival of a Welsh Corgi Pembroke puppy.

Puppy cage

A cage can be a convenient and practical solution when preparing your home for the arrival of a Welsh Corgi Pembroke puppy.
It is not about restriction, but about creating a safe and controlled space where the puppy can rest or stay unattended for a short time.

For a puppy, it is worth choosing a larger cage, preferably with room for growth, or even several sizes larger.
This allows the dog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably, and also makes the cage suitable for a longer period.

A cage is especially convenient if you live in a rented flat — it helps to protect furniture, floors and personal belongings while the puppy is still learning the rules of living in the house.

It is important to remember that the cage is not intended for permanent confinement of the puppy.
It should not replace walks, communication and free movement.
When used correctly, the cage becomes an aid rather than a restriction and is perceived by the puppy as a quiet place to rest.

4. Toys for puppies

To make your Welsh Corgi Pembroke puppy feel comfortable and less interested in furniture, shoes or wiring, it is worth preparing a sufficient number of toys.
The more toys you have, the easier it will be to keep your puppy occupied and channel its energy in a safe direction.

Toys should vary in size, material and purpose: soft, rubber, rope, fetch or interactive.
It is important to make sure that the puppy does not chew or tear them — in case of danger, teach it to spit out the items to avoid injury or a visit to the vet.

All games with your puppy should be supervised.
It is not recommended to play tug-of-war, and ropes and other toys are better used for fetching or light games, as with a kitten.

Toys help puppies develop coordination and thinking skills, and are also a safe way for them to burn off energy.
There are also special ‘useful’ games that train the body and mind, but that is a topic for a separate section.

5. Hygiene products for puppies

After walks, a Welsh Corgi Pembroke puppy may be dirty, so it is important to have shampoo and soap specially designed for dogs or puppies.

It is strictly forbidden to use cosmetics intended for humans, as they can irritate the skin and cause allergies.

It is not recommended to bathe your puppy with shampoo often — once a month is usually enough.
After each walk, it is enough to wash their paws and belly.

The exception is summer, when, due to the large amount of dust, bathing may be necessary every two to three weeks, as well as preparation for shows and exhibitions.

You can entrust the monthly bathing of your puppy to a professional groomer.
They will also help teach your puppy to stand still while being combed, trim their claws and care for their ears, and help prepare them for shows and exhibitions.

At the same time, daily basic care remains the responsibility of the owner: after walks, it is necessary to wash the paws and belly, regularly inspect the coat and monitor the general condition of the puppy.

6. Caring for your puppy's claws

Caring for your puppy's claws is a must.
Even the breed standard states that Welsh Corgi Pembroke claws should be short.

Claws that are too long and unkempt interfere with proper paw posture, which can negatively affect joint development over time.

You will need claw clippers or a grinder to care for your puppy's claws.
A small puppy's claws grow quite quickly, so you will need to trim them about once a week.
Regular care prevents discomfort and forms a good habit from an early age.
If necessary, you can also entrust the trimming of claws to a professional groomer, especially if the owner does not have sufficient experience.
